Am I a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

tummy tuckAre you in generally good physical condition but are concerned about stomach fat deposits and loose skin that do not respond to diet and exercise? If so, you could be an excellent candidate for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

If you’re considering getting a tummy tuck, there are some things you shouldn’t be, such as:

– Planning to have children. Tummy tucks tighten the vertical muscles in your abdomen, and pregnancy can separate those muscles, undoing the work your plastic surgeon did.

– Planning to lose a significant amount of weight. Tummy tucks aren’t a weight-loss tactic—they’re designed to address target areas and contour the body, nothing more drastic than that.

– Smoking cigarettes. If you’re a smoker, you should stay away from cigarettes for at least four weeks before and four weeks after your procedure. Smoking even one cigarette during that time period can seriously increase your chances of developing complications from a tummy tuck.

As long as none of those three scenarios describes you—and as long as you’re generally in good health—you’re probably a good candidate for a tummy tuck!

(Remember: A tummy tuck is not the same thing as liposuction—although some lipo could be involved in your abdominoplasty procedure. For more on this, see my post on the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction.)
