I performed a mommy makeover the other day that included liposuction to the lower back. This is a procedure I’ve done many times but realized I had no video record of how the procedure is done. I set out to change that!
A recent article in the open Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal highlights the use of the GoPro video camera mounted to the surgeon’s head to capture surgical procedures. This struck me as a great idea. For one, it doesn’t require a separate cameraman that’s always contorting their body trying to get the best angle. With a camera mounted on the surgeon’s head, the action is always in the shot. Plus you don’t have to worry about someone getting too close and breaking the sterility of the procedure. So I tried it.

The quality of the sound and video are excellent and certainly adequate to educate the viewer. One drawback is the short life of the battery. I actually started recording the breast augmentation/lift portion of the procedure when the battery died. But not to worry – I have the same procedure scheduled for tomorrow so I’ll pick up the missing footage during that operation!
