I’m guessing most women don’t know that something can be done about it but there’s a relatively simple procedure for it. I’m talking about women that are embarrassed due to overly large nipples that show through clothing. Maybe the nipple was always large or enlarged after pregnancy but nipple reduction is a viable option for women in this situation.
A nipple reduction is a relatively simple procedure that can be done under local anesthesia or in the operating room under a twilight (not general) sedation. This means that you don’t need to have a breathing tube placed in the back of the throat. Once the patient is sedated or at least numb in the area of the nipple, the area is prepped with betadine and reduced. Absorbable stitches are placed to aid in healing. Other than avoiding any trauma to the nipple while healing, there is no other special precautions associated with a nipple reduction procedure. Just keep the area clean with soap and water in the shower, no need for any ointment.
As can be seen in the photo above, a nipple reduction can be a very satisfying procedure for the patient. It’s not necessary to just “live with it.” If it’s bothering you, a nipple reduction can be performed in a doctor’s office without great disruption to your day.
